eMusic in the wings to provide downloads for a cost!

Today eMusic, who is the second largest online retailer of music behind iTunes, announced along with AT&T that they together will be providing a service to allow people to buy and download songs directly to their cellphones with no computer in between.

eMusic will be offering through the mobile service almost all of the 2.7 million songs available currently from the online service, DRM free as always, which feature only independent labels and not as many mainstream artists as rival services. They do however carry a number of popular artists such as Paul McCartney’s and his latest album.
The songs will be priced a little higher then they are online due to the increased cost of transferring them through the mobile network. Where $9.99 would get you 30 songs online, $7.49 will get you only 5 through the eMusic mobile service. As one consolation however, once downloaded you can also get a second copy of the song as an MP3 through the internet.

Downloading them at home before you go out would be a much better deal but eMusic believes that this service will benefit from a lot of impulse buying that just hasn’t met its opportunity until now.

well, well now I for one would NOT pay these types of prices to download music, I'd rather buy cds and burn em and make them to my liking. no there is no value here for music fans but than again just my personal opinion if people have the type of monies and like the conveniences well great for instant gratification.

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York (AP) -- Jerry Hadley, the world-class tenor known for his agile and lyric voice, died Wednesday, a week after he shot himself in an apparent suicide attempt.

Jerry Hadley sang lead in Paul McCartney's "Liverpool Oratorio," among many other works.

The 55-year-old singer died two days after doctors at St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie took him off life support, said family friend and spokeswoman Celia Novo.
Hadley, who had been battling personal problems, shot himself with an air rifle July 10 at his home in Clinton Corners, 80 miles north of New York City. State police said he was found unconscious on his bedroom floor.

The Illinois-born Hadley sang everything from Mozart to show tunes, including appearing on a recording of "Show Boat" that was a best-seller.
He built his reputation tackling demanding work, including the title role in composer John Harbison's 1999 "The Great Gatsby" at the Metropolitan Opera. Leonard Bernstein chose Hadley to sing the title role in a 1989 production of his musical "Candide," and he sang the lead in Paul McCartney's "Liverpool Oratorio" in 1991. more

The former BEATLE welcomes easier distribution of his new album Memory Almost Full with internet download services like iTunes, but insists he'll never be tempted to give up live gigs in favour of web concerts. The 65-year-old says, "I'm not interested in walking through a virtual world." And despite his fame, MCCartney reveals he's still a regular at other bands' live shows: "I can get out anywhere. You'd be surprised. If I want to go and see a band, I can do that." Last month (Jun07) MCCartney's own live performances in a string of U.S. record shops attracted unprecedented numbers of fans, many of whom queued more than 24 hours to see their idol in the flesh.

Sir Paul McCartney has told his fans not to try and interpret what his songs are about - because often he doesn't have a clue himself.

The ex-Beatle who released his new long-player 'Memory Almost Full' at the start of the month, says he has no fixed ideas when he writes the lyrics to one of his songs.
Macca said: "When I write something, half the time I don't have a specific idea what it's about.
"I've always had a wave of people who interpret things and say 'Oooh he's talking about Yoko' and I'm thinking 'What? No I'm bloody not! I'm talking about a car.' Yoko, Volvo - easy mistake."

My night with Sir Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney played to a small audience in Camden BBC News website reader Michael Kincaid was one of 1,000 fans who saw Sir Paul McCartney perform at London's Electric Ballroom on Thursday evening. Here is his account:

For all the column inches dedicated to deriding "wacky thumbs aloft Macca" and the Frog Chorus, no-one comes close to Macca for sheer, undiluted, melodic flair.
The man is incapable of writing a boring tune.
So when details of a one-off private gig were spread on the Beatles online community, I quick-footed it to the Electric Ballroom in Camden to do what any self-respecting lover of rock and roll does - queue.

Camden is an odd quarter at the best of times, but no stranger than when vested security guards found themselves shepherding McCartney fans.
Students and sailors
To the front of the line were the usual mix of middle-aged Beatles nostalgics and Wings devotees.
To the rear were passing Londoners used to joining a queue they knew nothing about, on the off-chance of a freebie.

Somewhere in-between were bums and bartenders, students and sailors, romantics and housebodies all hoping that they would make the first 500 and find themselves afforded the pink wristband that meant entry to the gig.
Grown men convulsed to the heart with excitement
Shuffling ever closer to the box office, we swapped thoughts on Macca's new album and put together our ideal set list for the gig.

The assembled camera crews did nothing to allay the growing tension, but once we filed through the box office and emerged triumphantly brandishing our wristbands they got all the footage they could ever want of grown men convulsed to the heart with excitement.
Frenzy
The process was repeated again that evening as we trooped back to the Electric Ballroom and took our places as close to the stage as we could.
A remix reel whipped us in to a frenzy, so when Macca and his backing band emerged on stage it was all we could do not to expire at the sight of the fabled Hofner Bass guitar.
The old favourites had the thronged fans stamping and singing

Macca launched into a performance of Drive My Car, a composition of pure summer pop that roused the audience to "beep beep" along with him without a second thought.
It was the pattern for a set list that showcased Macca's unerring gift for marrying melody to a heaven-sent bassline.
Back in the USSR

The old favourites had the thronged fans stamping and singing along like it was Candlestick Park all over again. But if Blackbird and Back in the USSR brought back memories, even the new songs impressed the crowd.

As Macca strummed the mandolin for new single Dance Tonight, the crowd sang along with the refrain as if they couldn't imagine a time when they didn't know the song.
So it was broad grins from the boys on stage as they took us in, singing and dancing, trading jokes with Macca, all and sundry clapping their approval.
Pure, unadulterated rock and roll

It was as far removed from Pop Idol or the manufactured stars of music today as you can get.
No peroxided boys and girls with reedy voices, no one anxious to impress with their street credentials; simply pure, unadulterated rock and roll.
We sang and danced, and as a canny old rocker once said in song, "everybody's going to feel all right tonight".
We sure did. Thanks Paul.

Wow sure was a nice review, a few people I know from Pauls webby went even my matey Sarah F got to see Paul, she was lost for words when I asked her about it It was one of the best nights of their lives!!

Paul McCartney is releasing his 21st solo album, "Memory Almost Full," on June 5. Thanks to his daughter, Stella, who is a fashion designer, Natalie Portman will perform in the music video for a track on his album called "Dance Tonight."
"The connection with Natalie came from my daughter Stella, who makes non-leather shoes that Natalie buys, so I just thought,

`Well, I'll ring her up and just see if she'll do it.' So I rang her up and said, `Hey, I'm Stella's dad!'" McCartney said on his website.
In the video actress Natalie Portman, 25, plays an electronic ghost who "is summoned by the sound of McCartney's mandolin." The former Beatles member premiered his video on Wednesday.

In another sign that artists are understanding more and more the effect of the internet on their sales and popularity, former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney has premiered his latest music video on YouTube. According to YouTube, the video has over 200,000 hits in under 48 hours "With its community of millions of worldwide users,

YouTube is the leader in online video, and the premier destination to watch and share original videos through a Web experience," McCartney said in a statement on his Web site. "The video for 'Dance Tonight' will be featured and promoted through the 'Director Videos' slots, which sit at the top of the homepage." McCartney's newest album, "Memory Almost Full" is set for release next week and "Dance Tonight" is the first single. Artists have been using sites like YouTube and MySpace more often to help gain new fans and to release videos to broader audiences. This is a trend I hope will continue.

Paul McCartney says "Memory Almost Full" isn't nostalgic

Paul McCartney says that his new album, Memory Almost Full, isn't based on nostalgia -- despite the fact that the album's first single is called "My Ever Present Past." McCartney told pitchforkmedia.com that, "I wouldn't use the word nostalgia so much. Nostalgia implies something a bit soppy -- it's not a sort of very complimentary word. I would use the word 'memory' more, because I think a lot of artists use memories."He added that, "You know, you're always looking at last year, or 10 years ago, or your school days, or your teenage years, your formative years. Because that's exactly what they are, they're your formative years."

McCartney chronicles key moments in his life in the song "That Was Me," which touches upon his childhood and early Beatles days, and even looks forward by writing his own requiem for the album's stately closer, "End Of The End." Macca did admit that the album has one foot rooted in the past: "I did look at the album and think, 'Whoa, it's all very retrospective.' But then I thought, "Wait a minute, when I was twenty-something I was writing about Penny Lane, which was my teenage years.' So, it's something you do. If you're using your imagination, you tend to look into the past for ideas.

" McCartney's Memory Almost Full" will be released on June 5th. The album is available for pre-order on amazon.com. Starbucks is now preparing a massive launch effort for Paul McCartney,

its first signed artist. The action begins June 5th, when Starbucks-owned Hear Music releases the McCartney disc, Memory Almost Full. The company plans to play the album on its launch date across more than 10,000 locations in 29 different countries, part of its Global Listening Event. "Customers from Taipei to Topeka have the opportunity to experience this extraordinary album all within a span of 24 hours," said Ken Lombard, president of Starbucks Entertainment.

"The Global Listening Event is one example of how we are bringing back the sense of event surrounding new releases, allowing fans to discover new music in a very personal way."

The coffee giant is also planning a massive party to celebrate McCartney's 65th birthday. The company is dispersing camera crews to key locations in London, New York, Berlin, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Seattle, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Miami.
